Hello, new League of Legends players. If you have recently just finished installing this MOBA and you are looking to get a head start on your fellow beginners, you have come to the right place.
There are many things you will need to learn as you continue to level in league of legends, however, this is one of the best beginners guides to league of legends and is focused on the very new players.
Step One: The Tutorial
- You were asked to play this when you first loaded up the game. If you completed the initial tutorial, continue to Step Two.
Game tutorials may be boring but League of Legends isn’t a game you can jump into and understand unless you have had some Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) experience.
If you didn’t agree to play the tutorial when you first loaded up the game, you can play it by clicking Play > Tutorials > Basic Tutorial
It only takes 5-10 minutes to complete the initial tutorial and the patience pays off. The initial tutorial teaches the bare bone basics of League of Legends so if you have no history in games like this, you should spend the time to complete it.
If you have already gone and completed the tutorial, lets move on to getting familiar with the game.
Step Two: Explore the Client
The League of Legends client can be a lot to take in after you first load it up. There are multiple different options and windows to click on.
Take your time to explore the client before jumping into the multiplayer, it may be worth your time to get a feel of everything.
You may notice the Runes and Masteries tabs within your profile, these are important later on. You don’t need to worry about Runes and Masteries until you have played a few games first, so lets discuss them another time.
Step Three: The Pre-Game Lobby
You can’t PvP until you reach level 3 which leaves you to face the AI along side your team (real players). The difficulty of the AI is up to you. You can either play the easiest mode ‘Intro’ that provides newbies with a lot of helpful hints or you can go with ‘Beginner’ which is still easy but removes some of the helping hands you got.
When you enter your first Pre-game lobby, chances are you will see people saying things like ‘top’, ‘adc’, ‘mid’, ‘jungle’ or ‘support’. These are all the roles each player plays. It is up to the players in the lobby to co-ordinate and make sure there is one player per role.
- Don’t worry about lanes and roles in Co-op vs. AI, go in any lane
- I go into more detail about roles and lanes in Part 2 of this guide
- Ignore the Runes and Masteries for now
You must also select your character to play in the pre-game lobby. Pick one you like the look of, you can also find out more information by selecting one and then clicking the portrait.
You can get details about champions on the League of Legends client, go to Profile > Champions. The champion portraits that are coloured are the ones you will be able select and play in the game, try finding a couple of them that suit your play style (tanky, supportive, high damage) so you know what to pick in the champion select screen.
You must also select Two summoner spells, the two default are a speed boost and heal, you can change them by clicking on the icons. You can also see the full set of summoner skills and what they do by going to Profile > Spells. Pick whatever spells you believe suits you best.
Lock in and get ready to roll out with your selected champion!
Step Four: Your First Game
Its the moment you have been waiting for! Your first few games are important. If you want to be ahead of fellow beginners in the real PvP after level 3, you need to learn some of the basics that you weren’t taught in detail during the tutorial.
When you first spawn in, next to the platform there is a shop keeper, you are going to want to shop for your first items. It can look confusing at first due to the large amount of different items but don’t worry there is a Recommended items tab for you to look at.
Its best if you purchase the items the game suggests, especially if you don’t know what the items really are. You can highlight each items and a small window appears giving you details, its worth while to read the ones you purchase to get an understanding.
- Remember to shop each time you are in the base
- You can sell items and undo recent purchases
- Many items build into something better
- Press ‘P’to open the shop window
After your little shopping spree, its time to head out into the big bad world and start killing things. Its a pretty large map, where do you go? What do you do? Its best for newbies to enter one of the 3 lanes.
The 3 lanes are Top, Middle and Bottom. Usually there is 1 player in Top, 1 player in Middle and 2 players at Bottom with your 5th team member in the jungle (the dark forest areas between lanes). However, its not uncommon for there to be 2 players in the top with no players in the jungle during the lower levels of League of Legends.
At this stage, it doesn’t matter where you go but if you would like to play with a team mate, its best to go bottom. Its not a good idea to have 3 people in the bottom so if there are already 2 heading that way, pick another lane.
In order to succeed in your lane, you must farm the small enemy minions for gold and use that gold to purchase better items. Remember you only get gold when you are the person to have the finishing blow on the minion. The rest you learned in the tutorial. Basically try kill your enemies, destroy the turrets and win (or lose) the game.
Continue to play vs AI until you reach level 3 and if you feel that you are ready to progress into PvP and want to know how to prepare for it, check out Part 2 of my Step by Step guide Beginners Guide to League of Legends.
